Mykola Mishchenko, a 34-year-old Vinnytsia region resident, died on 9 August 2026 in hospital two days after mobilization and injuries in barracks.

Timeline

  • 07.08.2026 — Mykola Mykolaiovych Mishchenko of Klitenka in the Ulaniv community, born on 28 June 1992, was mobilized by the Khmilnyk District TCC and SP. The community announced the death on 12 August.
  • He underwent military medical examination (VLK), was classified as fit for military service in rear support units, and was delivered to a military unit in Koziatyn, Vinnytsia region, on the same day.
  • 08.08 – 09.08.2026 — while on the premises of the military unit barracks, the conscript sustained severe traumatic injuries and was urgently admitted to Koziatyn Central District Hospital.
  • 09.08.2026 — Mykola Mishchenko died in the hospital intensive care unit.

Conflicting Accounts and Circumstances

Police and TCC Position

Vinnytsia police spokeswoman Zarina Maievska said the hospitalization and death followed a fall from a second-floor barracks window. Detectives registered proceedings under Article 115 of the Criminal Code marked as an accident.

The Vinnytsia regional TCC replied that Mishchenko had been listed as a military-registration violator since January 2026. He was called up on 7 August and found fit for rear units. The 24 August reply to RIA Koziatyn was signed by acting head Lieutenant Colonel Yevhen Verkhovskyi. Spokeswoman Myroslava Liashuk gave Suspilne the same account.

Family and Mother's Statement

Relatives reject the accidental-fall account. The mother visited her son in hospital on 9 August. According to her words, relayed by Snizhana Yashchuk, Mykola said he had been beaten. After the body came home the family saw bruises on the face and a broken arm. MediaKhab writes that the family was told of the death two days later. The family demands an examination and identification of those involved.

Investigation

  • Khmilnyk District Police Department is conducting a pre-trial investigation under Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
