Biography

Oleksandr Gashevskyi, 20 years old (born 2003), was a student at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. According to the Oberih register, he was entitled to a draft deferment. He was not a violator of mobilization rules. He left his passport at home.

Chronology

  • 10.07.2024 - he went hiking in the mountains near Verkhovyna, Ivano-Frankivsk region.
  • 14.07.2024 - he boarded a minibus from Verkhovyna to Ivano-Frankivsk via Vorokhta. He called his father; the call lasted 39 seconds. The connection was poor. The last word his father heard was "border guards." After that, the line went dead.
  • 18.07.2024 - his mother filed a missing person report with the police.
  • ~18.07.2024 - Hungarian law enforcement informed the Mukachevo border guard detachment about a body found with Gashevskyi's documents. Border guards concealed this information from the parents for two weeks.
  • 30.07.2024 - Mukachevo border guards finally informed the family's lawyer about the body.

Circumstances of the incident

The family's lawyer, Oleh Veremiienko, said there was a high probability that staff of the Verkhovyna TCC were involved. According to his version, Oleksandr was beaten at a checkpoint between Verkhovyna and Vorokhta.

His father believes his son may have died as a result of:

  • illegal detention and beating by border guards;
  • or being handed over to TCC representatives who demanded that he sign a contract.

Key contradictions:

  • Border Guard Service spokesperson Andrii Demchenko said border guards did not detain or check Gashevskyi.
  • At the same time, the Ukrainian side hid for two weeks the fact that Hungarian border guards had reported the body.
  • Oleksandr had a lawful student deferment and was not a violator.

Investigation status

Police are investigating the circumstances of his disappearance and death. The case drew wide public attention.
